Celebration Through Giving

We think it’s exciting when our Women’s Service Day volunteers continue helping the agencies they’ve become familiar with through our event. I like to call it “the ripple effect.” And here’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about.

For years, Christine has been a constant helper in the kitchen assisting with the meal for Women’s Service Day the day before and the day of the event. At this year’s Women’s Service Day, she learned about Nuestra Casa, the Westcore neighborhood center we started renovating for our 2011 event. She wanted to do something big for her birthday this year so she asked ten of her friends, plus her husband, to join her for a work day at Nuestra Casa to celebrate her birthday. What’s really cool is that Christine is a Westcore neighbor herself.

Last fall she helped prepare pigs-in-the-blanket as part of a fundraiser on Women’s Service Day.

This time, it was all about her.

Except that it wasn’t. That’s the wonderful irony in this event. As a way to celebrate, Christine chose to gather her friends together and do something for the community. They picked a Saturday that worked for everyone and–unbelievably–it was probably the nicest February day you could ask for in West Michigan, weather-wise.

The team, with help of Westcore neighbors Jim and Raul, spent the morning and afternoon scraping up linoleum on the main floor, organizing the garage and reinforcing its ceiling, sending a load of usable stuff to Habitat for Humanity’s Restore, pulling nails, and building a Jenga game that will be used by children at Nuestra Casa when it’s finished. Christine’s husband, Brad, arranged for lunch for the crew and we brought the birthday cake.

Check out the slideshow of the day’s events.

This is such a great story of how community development and networking can go hand-in-hand. Thank you to Christine for choosing to spend her birthday by giving to the community. And thank you to everyone who offered their time this weekend to support Westcore Neighbors and Nuestra Casa.

If you’re interested in doing this kind of thing for your birthday or other occasion, contact us and we’ll help arrange a work day.

  1. Thanks, Marcia, Lois, Waltraud (who made me a birthday cake, even!), Sue, Carrie, Cindy, and Cheryl and anyone else who helped make this happen and also to my friends who gave up an exceptionally beautiful Saturday to scrape up linoleum; pry nails and staples out of the floor; shore up, clean out and organize a garage; and make a giant jenga set from scratch. You WSD folks and my neighborhood friends, all of whom volunteer endlessly for a variety of causes, set the example. All I did was follow it. Thanks for making it easy and fun to do good in the ‘hood!
